Answer

Who builds a backyard putting green in Destin?

The short answer

ForeverLawn Emerald Coast does, with GolfGreens, a synthetic turf line made for golf. It comes as putting turf with adjustable speed, chipping turf, pitching turf and tee line turf, so a backyard green can be a putting surface alone or a short game area. Each green is designed around the space rather than dropped into it.

What is a backyard putting green made of?

Not lawn turf. A putting surface has to roll a ball true, and ordinary artificial grass is cut and backed to look like a lawn, not to behave like a green.

GolfGreens is the product line built for it. The company describes four surfaces: putting turf, with adjustable speed options so the green can be set to roll like the courses you play; chipping turf, cut to feel like a chipping area; pitching turf, closer to a fairway; and tee line turf, made to take the repeated impact of a swing. A backyard build can use one of those or several.

What decides whether the green plays well?

The base. A green is a shaped surface, and the shaping is done in the base under the turf, not in the turf. Breaks, a crown, a collar, a tee line that sits level: all of it is built into the ground before the surface goes down, which is why the company designs a green around the space rather than fitting a standard shape to it.

Then the speed. Putting turf with adjustable speed means the green can be set to match the greens you actually play, and that is worth settling at the design stage, because a backyard green faster or slower than your course teaches you the wrong putt.

What else goes in with it?

A putting green rarely goes in alone. A dog run on K9Grass, a lawn on ForeverLawn Landscape and a green on GolfGreens is one project with three grasses in it, and the company installs more than one product line in a yard regularly. The Destin page covers how a job runs there.

What about commercial greens and portable greens?

GolfGreens is also installed on golf courses, at resorts and at sports facilities, for putting greens, tee lines and practice areas. And there are portable putting greens, built to be moved and set up for an event, a trade show or a temporary space.

How is it built?

The same three stages as any ForeverLawn Emerald Coast project: a free consultation on site, where the space is measured and the design talked through; a written proposal you read before anything starts, with a down payment by ACH, card or check; then the install, from site preparation and grading, base material, and the turf laid, cut, seamed and secured. Timelines run from a day to 12 weeks across the company’s work, and a green is at the shorter end unless the site needs drainage or the turf is on order.

What does it cost?

The size of the green, how much shaping the base needs, which surfaces go in, and access for the crew. Financing is available, and a written quote follows the consultation. The cost page explains what moves a number.

What about upkeep and the warranty?

A hose and a leaf blower for most of it, with no mowing, watering or fertiliser. Premium ForeverLawn products carry a 15 year warranty and the installation a 24 month warranty. The main installation guide covers both.

Questions we get asked

How big does a backyard green need to be?

Big enough for the putts you want to practise. A green for three-footers and a green with a breaking twelve-footer are different sizes, and the consultation is where that gets drawn.

Can I chip onto it?

Yes, if it is built for it. Chipping turf is a separate surface in the GolfGreens line, laid beside the putting surface, and the green’s collar and the landing area are designed to take a chip rather than a roll.

Does it work in shade or next to a pool?

Yes to both. Synthetic turf does not need light to stay green, and it takes pool traffic without the mess grass makes.

How do I start?

Call 850-812-3388 or use the contact form. The office at 648 Lovejoy Rd NW, Fort Walton Beach is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the GolfGreens surfaces are easier to judge underfoot than on a screen.

Want a real number for your own yard?

The consultation is free. Someone comes out, measures the space, talks through which turf suits how you use it, and the written quote follows from that.
